Mental Disorders show actual physical or structural changes in the brain. According to the DSM some of these mental disorders are also classified as mood disorders.
The above image show some of the physical changes that can occur with different mental/emotional disorders. Notice that different areas of the brain are affected. Which areas are affected in Depression? How and what neurotransmitters/biochemicals are affected?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)People with ASD have problems with normal interpersonal interactions. Suffers avoid eye contact, fail to respond when spoken to, engage in repetitive motions or unusual behaviors, need a familiar routine, use gestures inappropriately and have delayed language development.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD)ADD and ADHD is when the mind in under active. There are 6 types and they all have the same core symptoms; short attention span, trouble with sustained mental effort, failure in school or difficulty learning, poor impulse control, has trouble waiting their turn, talking excessively, running opposed to walking and acting as if controlled by a motor. The form of treatment for ADD/ADHD are stimulants. Types of ADD/ADHD are Classic ADD, Inattentive ADD, Over focused ASS, Temporal Lobe ADD, Limbic ADD, Ring of Fire.

DepressionDepression is a mood disorder that causes persistent feelings of sadness and loss of interest. It is most common in females and is the most common emotional illness in teens (although anxiety disorders have substantially increased and are becoming #1).There are 7 types of depression; Major Depressive Disorder, Dysthymia, SAD, Postpartum Depression, Situational Depression, PMDD and Atypical Depression

- Suicide occurs almost twice as often as murder.
- Each year, about 32,000 people in the US die by suicide.
- Suicide is the third leading cause of death for people ages 15 to 24.
- A gun is the most common method of suicide (in men)
- One suicide death occurs for every 4 suicide attempts.
- Women try suicide more often, but men are 4 times more likely to die from a suicide attempt.
- 90% of people who die by suicide have clinical depression or another diagnose-able mental disorder.
Warning Signs
- Always talking about or thinking about death.
- Saying things such as “It would be better if I wasn’t here”.
- Having Clinical Depression symptoms.
- Making comments about being hopeless, helpless or worthless.
- Putting affairs in order or changing a will.
- Visiting or calling people to say goodbye.
- Giving away prized possessions.
- Alcohol or drug abuse.
Myths
- Suicidal people want to die.
- Boys are more serious than girls.
- They just want attention.
- Don’t mention “it” to them.
- Suicidal people are "crazy" or mentally ill.
