Sterilization is a surgical contraceptive method in which a person is rendered permanently unable to conceive children. The purpose of this procedure if to prevent sperm and ova from becoming a fertilized egg. People who chose this method already have children and or are people who have strong reasons for not wanting children. When deciding whether or not to have a sterilization procedure, both people in the relationship should be aware.

A vasectomy is when a males Vas Deferens is cut. The purpose is to prevent sperm from leaving the testes. This method if 100% effective and permanent. Post surgery, males can continue with normal functions. A vasectomy is less inexpensive than female sterilization and typically has a quick recovery time.

A females sterilization is called tubal ligation. This procedure consists of cutting and sealing a women's Fallopian Tubes and can be done in different ways. The Fallopian Tubes can be closed with clamps, clips or rings or a section may be cut and removed. Just like male sterilization, female sterilization is 100% effective due to the sperm being unable to reach the ova.
