Stress Response
To truly understand emotional disorders, we must first understand the body's response to stress. Stress is defined as your body's normal response to an actual or a perceived immediate threat or danger. Stress on the body comes in many forms and is linked to biological, environmental & physical origins. It could be emotional stress such as from an upcoming exam, from being startled or excited; or physical such as a broken arm, illness or simply exercising. Thus, it affects numerous body tissues, organs and organ systems, having a wide range of effects on mood, emotion and behavior. Interestingly, the body does NOT distinguish between emotional and physical stress.
