MISSION STATEMENT
Whitman Hanson Regional High School provides all students with a high quality education in order to develop reflective, concerned citizens and contributing members of the global community.

I.Course Description:
a.This required course is designed to increase the student’s knowledge and understanding of the anatomy and physiology specific body systems, including, but not limited to: nervous, circulatory, immune and reproductive. It will prepare students to make informed decisions concerning adolescence, socio-emotional & physical well-being, substance abuse, human sexuality & infectious disease. Students will also be encouraged to develop a positive self-image, to manage obstacles (stress/stress management) and responsibilities in a healthy way, to identify potentially harmful action/risks, and to learn socially acceptable behavior.
II.Course Objectives:
Students will be able to:
a.Make informed choices about all aspects of their life and lifestyle.
b.Understand the concepts of health and wellness.
c.Understand the development of the brain and personality.
d.Examine the role of infectious vs. lifestyle & familial disease(s) in today’s society.
e.Understand the anatomy and physiology of the human life cycle, human sexuality, pregnancy and STI’s
f.Examine the role and effects (short term & long term) of drugs and alcohol in society.
g.Identify and understand various emotional/psychological disorders.
h.The risks and warning signs of Suicide
i.Recognize & manage aspects of emotional and physiological stress.
j.Identify and limit sexual harassment and bullying
k.Understand healthy vs unhealthy relationships and conflict resolution.
III.Classwork/Classroom Expectations:
Students are responsible for the following:
a.Being prepared for class; bringing writing utensils, a notebook, a folder, homework and any other necessary materials to class daily. Students will be responsible for reading assigned material, taking notes, answering questions (oral & written), and participating in class discussions.
NOTE: I will NOT supply any writing utensils for students. This is part of being a responsible student.
b.Working to your full potential for entire class period and beyond
a.NOTES:
i.Struggling is part of learning but you ARE capable of anything you desire.
ii.YOU are important as a student and a human being…..you are the focus of this class
iii.YOU are responsible for your learning and your grade, not me.
iv.EVERYTHING you do or don’t do, affects EVERYBODY else.
c.Exemplifying respect for self and respect for others. There will be ZERO TOLERANCE for insubordination and inappropriate behavior.
d.Having a positive attitude, an open mind, and willingness to explore what is “right” in the world.
IV.Homework:
a.Homework is assigned during the trimester as a means of reinforcing information learned, as a way of applying multiple intelligences, and as a means of facilitating independent learning.
b.There are two standing homework assignments:
1.All black, bolded questions on ANY assigned website reading must be completed for homework.
2.Unit vocabulary is due on the day of each unit exam.
c. Assignments are to be neat, legible, complete, and handed in at the beginning of class on the day they are due. ALL assignments are to be completed with full sentences, numbered, and sections labeled; those turned in without requirements will receive a minimum of a 10 point deduction.
**Any illegible assignment or assignment turned in without a name will receive no credit.
**Email and/or Google doc assignments are accepted but must specify the proper assignment name in the subject line or title to be clearly identified.
e.LATE POLICY: Coursework handed in 1 day late will yield a grade no higher than 75%, 2 days late will yield a grade no higher than 50%, > 3 days late will result in zero credit for that assignment. ** It would behoove you to complete all homework regardless of credit earned for learning and effort purposes.
f.Quizzes may be given for, but not limited to, assigned readings. Students should be prepared, as they are designed to benefit student knowledge and performance.
g.Assignments/Quizzes may consist of the following:
i.Locating newspaper articles
ii.Readings and chapter reviews
iii.Question & answer worksheets
iv.Outside projects
v.Creating posters for major units
vi.Journal and notebook entries
vii.Website
viii.Other as assigned by the teacher
NOTE: All Assignments are written on the white board located to the back of the classroom and should be checked daily. This is YOUR responsibility!!
V.Quizlet and Kahoot are available study resources for students that create or have existing accounts. Quizlet user name= Heidi_Martin11/Password= WHRHSHEALTH
Kahoots are public (and are associated with a #) or I can share them with you per request.

The final grade will be determined as follows:

Final Exam:

XII.Cell Phones:
a.Cell phones and head phones are NOT permitted during academic time. When the bell rings, all electronic devices should be placed in your backpack (or bag) on silent. Pockets are NOT bags……
b.In the event it is required for educational purposes during class time, this will be communicated to you in advance.
c.Failure to adhere to the school’s electronics policy may result in removal of said device to the office for disciplinary action.
XIII.Extra Help/Make-up:
a.Extra help is available in Room # 339 on Tuesdays although occasionally, I am available on other days as well. Please see me if you need to stay for extra help.
b.Additionally, there is a homework help group that meets M-Th in the Courtyard Café or the Library, providing snacks, tutoring and a late bus at 4pm.
